Could का प्रयोग वाक्यों में Past Ability, Power, Strength, Possibility, Permission तथा Polite Request को व्यक्त करने के लिए करते हैं। Could का हिंदी में अर्थ सका, सकी, सके, सकता था, सकती थी, सकते थे आदि होता है। Could का प्रयोग Can के Past Tense के रूप में किया जाता है। जैसे;

वह कल आगरा नहीं जा सका।
He could not go to Agra yesterday.
रोहन यह नदी पार कर सकता था।
Rohan could cross this river.
वह आपको सच्चाई बता सकी।
She could tell you the truth.
तुम उसे मिल सकते थे।
You could meet him.
वह मैच जीत सकता था।

वे समय पर ऑफिस नहीं पहुंच सके।

ऊपर दिए गए वाक्यों में Could का प्रयोग हुआ है। इन वाक्यों में हमें could से भूतकाल की योग्यता, अनुमति विनम्र, निवेदन तथा क्षमता का पता चलता है।

Always remember: Can का पास्ट टेंस could होता है। Could किसी व्यक्ति की क्षमता योग्यता का पता चलता है। उदाहरण के लिए; जब मैं छोटा था मैं पानी में तैर सकता था। इस वाक्य में पता चलता है कि भूतकाल में कोई व्यक्ति जब छोटा था तो वह है तैरने का कार्य करने में समर्थ था लेकिन अब वह है यह कार्य करने में समर्थ नहीं है। ऐसे वाक्यों में could का अर्थ was/were able to होता है।

Use of Could Rules in Hindi

Could का प्रयोग वाक्यों में करने के लिए नीचे दिए गए नियमों का ज्ञान होना अति आवश्यक है। Could का प्रयोग वाक्य में करने से पहले आप इन नियमों को अच्छी तरह से समझ लें। Can का प्रयोग ‘informal’ जबकि could का प्रयोग ‘polite’ है।

Rule: 1 Can का Past Tense ‘could’ होता है। could का negative रूप could not तथा couldn’t है। जैसे;

राहुल इस पुस्तक को पढ़ सकता है। (Present)
Rahul can read this book.
राहुल इस पुस्तक को पढ़ सकता था। (Past)
Rahul could read this book.

Rule: 2 Could का प्रयोग, ‘Polite Request’ अत्यंत विनम्र निवेदन को व्यक्त करने के लिए करते हैं। ‘would’ के स्थान पर ‘could’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है; जैसे;

1. Could you give me water?
क्या आप मुझे पानी दे सकते हैं?

2. Could you help my brother please?
क्या आप कृपया मेरे भाई की मदद कर सकते हैं?

3. Could you bring me a cup of coffee?
क्या आप मेरे लिए एक कप कॉफी ला सकते हैं?

4. Could you stay for me?
क्या आप मेरे लिए रह सकते हैं?

Rule: 3 Could का प्रयोग Past में ability/capacity को व्यक्त करने के लिए करते हैं। जैसे;

1. She could drive a bus.
वह एक बस चला सकती है।

2. You could not prepare tea for the guests.
आप मेहमानों के लिए चाय नहीं बना सके।

4. We could win the match if tried.
अगर कोशिश की जाती तो हम मैच जीत सकते थे।

5. The employees could not tell their problems in the meeting.
बैठक में कर्मचारी अपनी समस्या नहीं बता सके।

Rule: 4 Could का प्रयोग conditional possibility को व्यक्त करने के लिए भी करते हैं। जैसे;

(a) If she knew it, she could have returned.
अगर उसे पता होता तो वह लौट सकती थी।

(b) If he could just be more polite, people would accept his proposal.
अगर वह अधिक विनम्र हो सकता है, तो लोग प्रस्ताव स्वीकार करेंगे।

How to make sentences of Could

Rule (1): Could का प्रयोग Singular तथा Plural Subjects के साथ किया जाता है।

Rule (2): Could के साथ Main Verb की पहली अवस्था (First Form) का प्रयोग करते हैं।

Affirmative Sentences of Could

Affirmative Sentences में Could का प्रयोग करने के लिए ऊपर दिए गए नियमों के अनुसार किया जाता है। नीचे दिए गए Sentence Structure के अनुसार वाक्य को मनाया जाता है।

Sentence Structure – Subject + could + first form of the verb + object + others.

1. वह बाजार जा सकता था।
He could go to market.

2. हम क्रिकेट खेल सकते थे।

Negative Sentences of Could

Could का प्रयोग Negative Sentences में करने के लिए Could को Subject के बाद रखते हैं तथा इसके बाद not लगा देते हैं। इसके अतिरिक्त आप couldn’t का प्रयोग भी कर सकते हैं।

Interrogative Sentences of Could

Could का प्रयोग प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य में दो प्रकार से होता है। पहला जो वाक्य क्या शुरू होते हैं तथा दूसरा बे वाक्य जिनके बीच में प्रश्नवाचक शब्द आता है। दोनों तरह के वाक्यों को हिंदी से अंग्रेजी में ट्रांसलेट करने के नियम नीचे विस्तार से दिए गए हैं।

जो वाक्य ‘क्या’ शब्द से शुरू होते हैं, उनकी अंग्रेजी नहीं लगाते हैं। ऐसे Sentences को Could से शुरू करते हैं।
