Past Continuous Tense से हमें ज्ञात होता है कि कोई कार्य भूतकाल में जारी था अर्थात अपूर्ण था। दूसरे शब्दों में कह सकते हैं कि Past Continuous Tense का प्रयोग उन घटनाओं या कार्यों को व्यक्त करने के लिए करते हैं जो भूतकाल में हमारी आंखों के सामने जारी थे अर्थात समाप्त नहीं हुए थे।‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌ जैसे;

Examples:

1. श्याम कल सड़क पर दौड़ रहा था।
Shyam was running on the road yesterday.

2. मैं आपको हिंदी में टेंस पढ़ रहा था।
I was teaching you tenses in Hindi.

3. राजा अपने सैनिकों को संबोधित कर रहा था।
The king was addressing his soldiers

4. रेखा किचन में खाना पका रही थी।
Rekha was cooking food in the kitchen.

5. जब मैं घर पहुंचा, सभी लोग सो रहे थे।
When I reached home, everyone was sleeping.

6. राम खेल रहा था जबकि मैं पढ़ रहा था।
Ram was playing while I was studying.

8. सभी जानवर खेतों में चल रहे थे।
All the animals were walking in the fields.

9. जब श्याम वहां आया, मैं आप सभी को कुछ बता रहा था।
When Shyam came there, I was telling something to you all.

10. राजेश का पुराना मित्र उससे मिलने आ रहा था।
An old friend of Rajesh was coming to meet him.

Note: ऊपर दिए गए पास्ट कंटीन्यूअस टेंस के Hindi Sentences के मुख्य क्रिया से बोध हो रहा है कि कार्य भूतकाल में जारी था तथा समाप्त नहीं हुआ था। इन वाक्यों की संरचना सहायक क्रिया was/were तथा मुख्य क्रिया की फर्स्ट फॉर्म में ing जोड़कर हुई है। कुछ वाक्यों में सिंपल पास्ट टेंस का प्रयोग भी हुआ है।

Past Continuous Tense से उन कार्य या घटनाओं का बोध होता है जो भूतकाल में हमारी आंखों के सामने जारी थे, लेकिन समाप्त नहीं हुए थे। पास्ट कंटीन्यूअस टेंस एक साथ दो कार्य या घटनाओं के होने का बोध भी कराता है अर्थात एक साथ दो कार्यों जारी होना। Past Continuous Tense को Hindi में अपूर्ण भूतकाल कहते हैं। जैसे;

1. रामू कल अपने बेटे को पढ़ा रहा था।
(Ramu was teaching his son yesterday.)

2. अखिलेश पांडे अपनी भाई का इंतजार कर रहा था।
Akhilesh Pandey was waiting for his brother.

3. जब अध्यापक ने कमरे में प्रवेश किया सभी छात्र शोर कर रहे थे।
When the teacher entered the room all the students were making noise.

4. मैं रविवार को बस से मुंबई जा रहा था।
I was going to Mumbai by bus on Sunday.

5. सीमा खाना खा रही थी जबकि उसकी बहन कमरे में नाच रही थी।
Seema was having food while her sister was dancing in the room.

6. राजा अपनी प्रजा को संबोधित कर रहा था।
The king was addressing his subjects.

7. वह अपने गांव में एक बड़ा अस्पताल बना रहा था।
He was building a big hospital in his village.

8. रोहित दो दिन पहले रेलवे स्टेशन पर रुका हुआ था।
Rohit was staying at the railway station two days ago.

9. सभी लोग जमीन पर बैठे हुए थे।
Everyone was sitting on the ground.

10. इस गांव के लोग मंत्री जी का बेसब्री से इंतजार कर रहे थे।
The people of this village were eagerly waiting for the minister.

Explanation: ऊपर दिए गए Past Continuous Tense के वाक्य में से पहले वाक्य द्वारा व्यक्त हो रहा है कि रामू कल (बीता हुआ) अपने बेटे को पढ़ाने का कार्य कर रहा था।

दूसरे वाक्य से ज्ञात हो रहा है कि अखिलेश द्वारा किसी स्थान पर उसके भाई का इंतजार किया जा रहा था। तीसरे वाक्य में अध्यापक के कमरे में पहुंचने पर बच्चों को शोर करते हुए देखा गया। इस वाक्य में एक कार्य हो रहा था उसी दौरान दूसरा कार्य हुआ।

चौथे वाक्य में कोई व्यक्ति रविवार के दिन बस द्वारा मुंबई जा रहा था। इस वाक्य की घटना भी बीते हुए समय की है जो कि जारी थी। अंतिम वाक्य से पता चलता है कि इसमें दो कार्य एक साथ हो रहे थे। इसमें सीमा खाना खा रही थी और उसकी बहन कमरे में नृत्य कर रही थी।

ऊपर दी गई व्याख्या के अनुसार ये सभी वाक्य Past Continuous Tense (पास्ट कंटीन्यूअस टेंस) के हैं तथा इनमें भूतकाल में कार्य जारी होने का बोध हो रहा है।

Past Continuous Tense के वाक्यों की क्रियाओं के अंत में रहा था, रही थी, रहे थे, हुआ था, हुई थी, हुए थे आदि शब्द आते हैं, वे वाक्य Past Continuous Tense के होते हैं। ऐसे वाक्यों में कोई कार्य घटना अपूर्ण पाई जाती है। जैसे;

राजू हंस रहा था।
तुम पानी पी रहे थे।
वह कहानी पढ़ रहा था।
मैं अपनी कार चला रहा था।
बच्चे मेज पर बैठे हुए थे।
यात्री प्लेटफार्म पर लेटे हुए थे।
अध्यापक कक्षा में पढ़ा रहे थे।
चपरासी कमरे साफ कर रहा था।
चित्रकार चित्र बना रहा था।
वह आपका इंतजार कर रहा था।

Note: यदि आप Past Continuous Tense के अंग्रेजी वाक्यों को पहचानना हो तो वाक्य में Helping Verb क्रिया Was तथा Were तथा Main verb के साथ ing का प्रयोग हो तो वे sentence पास्ट कंटीन्यूअस टेंस होते हैं। जैसे;

Main Verb (मुख्य क्रिया)

Past Continuous Tense की मुख्य क्रिया Verb की First Form के साथ ing (verb I + ing) होती है। जैसे;

मैं आपका इंतजार कर रहा था। (I was waiting for you.)
वह चने खा रहा था। (He was eating gram.)
वह एक उपन्यास पढ़ रहा था। (He was reading a novel.)
वे अपने गांव पैदल जा रहे थे। (They were going to their village on foot.)
सोहन जोर से हंस रहा था। (They were going to their village on foot.)

Helping Verb (सहायक क्रिया)

Past Continuous Tense की सहायक क्रिया was तथा were होती है। जैसे;

He was cleaning his car. (वह अपनी कार साफ कर रहा था।)
You were looking for help. (तुम मदद ढूंढ रहे थे।)
I was not working there. (मैं वहां काम नहीं कर रहा था।)
We were jumping into the well. (हम कुएं में कूद रहे थे।)

Rule – 1 Past Continuous Tense in Hindi के वाक्यों को हिंदी से अंग्रेजी में बनाते समय एक वचन कर्ता के साथ हेल्पिंग वर्ब was तथा बहुवचन कर्ता के साथ were का प्रयोग करते हैं। जैसे;

Affirmative Sentences of Past Continuous Tense

Past Continuous Tense के Affirmative Sentences को बनाने के लिए नीचे दिए गए निम्नलिखित स्टेप्स को फॉलो करते हैं;

सबसे पहले वाक्य का कर्ता (subject) रखते हैं।
उसके बाद कर्ता के अनुसार सहायक क्रिया was तथा were का प्रयोग करते हैं।
सहायक क्रिया के बाद मुख्य क्रिया की फर्स्ट फॉर्म में ing जोड़कर लगाते हैं।
यदि वाक्य में कोई कर्म (object) आया है तो उसे मुख्य क्रिया के बाद रखते हैं।
कर्म के बाद आप अन्य शब्दों (other words) को रखते हैं।
यदि वाक्य साधारण है तो वाक्य के अंत में full stop लगाते हैं।

Structure: Subject + was/were + verb I + ing + object + other words

Past Continuous Tense के Negative Sentences को बनाने के लिए सबसे पहले;

Subject को सबसे पहले रखते हैं।
उसके helping verb ‘was’ या ‘were’ रखते हैं।

Past Continuous Tense के प्रश्नवाचक वाक्यों को दो तरह से हिंदी से अंग्रेजी में ट्रांसलेट कर सकते हैं; yes-no type तथा wh-word type.

Yes-No Type Questions

पास्ट कंटीन्यूअस टेंस के जो वाक्य ‘क्या’ सब से प्रारंभ होते हैं, उनकी अंग्रेजी हिंदी से बनाने के लिए नीचे दिए गए इस steps को फॉलो करते हैं;

यदि वाक्य ‘क्या’ से शुरू है तो उसकी जगह सबसे पहले was तथा were को रखते हैं।
उसके बाद वाक्य का कर्ता (subject) रखते हैं।
कर्ता के बाद मुख्य क्रिया (main verb) की फर्स्ट फॉर्म में ing जोड़कर रखते हैं।
मुख्य क्रिया के बाद कर्म (object) रखते हैं।
कर्म के बाद अन्य शब्दों (other words) को रखते हैं तथा वाक्य अंत में प्रश्नवाचक चिन्ह (question mark) लगाते हैं?

Past Continuous Tense के Interrogative Sentences के वाक्यों में प्रश्नवाचक शब्द के साथ-साथ नहीं भी आता है। ऐसे वाक्यों का हिंदी से अंग्रेजी में अनुवाद करते समय निम्न बातों को ध्यान में रखते हैं।

क्या वाले Interrogative Negative Sentences

जो वाक्य क्या से शुरू होते हैं तथा जिनके बीच में नहीं शब्द आता है उन्हें हिंदी से अंग्रेजी में ट्रांसलेट करने के लिए सबसे पहले;

क्या की अंग्रेजी की जगह Was या Were को रखते हैं।
उसके बाद वाक्य का सब्जेक्ट लगाते हैं।
सब्जेक्ट के बाद not का प्रयोग करते हैं।
नोट के बाद मुख्य क्रिया की फर्स्ट फॉर्म में ing के साथ लिखते हैं।
उसके बाद कर्म (object) रखते हैं।
वाक्य का कर्म रखने के बाद अन्य शब्दों (other words) को लिखते हैं। तथा अन्य शब्दों के बाद अंत में प्रश्नवाचक चिन्ह लगाते हैं।

Structure: Was/Were + subject + not + verb I + ing + object + other words + ?

1. क्या राजेश आपके साथ नहीं रह रहा था?
Was Rajesh not staying with you?

2. क्या तुम इस कहानी का अनुवाद नहीं कर रहे थे? Weren’t you translating this story?

3. क्या वह तोते नहीं पकड़ रहा था?
Wasn’t he catching the parrot?

4. क्या शिकारी शिकार नहीं कर रहा था?
Was the hunter not hunting?

5. क्या भालू शहद नहीं खाना था?
Didn’t the bear eat honey?

6. क्या मछलियां समुद्र में तैर रही थी?
Were the fish swimming in the sea?

7. क्या आंधी नहीं चल रही थी?
